Summer time! I’m a teacher and as you’ve probably heard, WE GET SUMMERS OFF! It’s my favorite thing about this profession as I usually do something cool in the summer like take a job at a summer camp or do some type of tutoring. This year I decided to go way outside my comfort zone and hit the road on a two month travelling odyssey! I’m going to Asia first to hit up Japan and China then I’ve got a one-way ticket to Brazil where I’ll go from there. I have to make sure the house is in good shape before I leave, though, and I’ve reached out to some gardeners and looked into a security system at securitychoice.com.
Want to make sure nothing happens to the place while I’m gone! My friend Shana is going to come with me and I just think it’s going to be the trip of a lifetime. How could it not be? It better be good since I’m spending most of my savings to make it happen!

The Martinsville Speedway is only used twice a year. Both times are for Nascar races, and my friends and I never miss an opportunity to go when they’re in town. I guess if people understood Martinsville, it would be very clear on why the locals like it so much. Martinsville is about an hour south of Roanoke, Virginia. The further you get from Roanoke, the closer you come to where real country folks live. Sure, we have all the modern features like McDonald’s and WalMart, but that’s about as exciting as it gets here. That is, until Nascar comes into town. The drivers are usually here for a few days, so we get to interact with them at the Mexican restaurant that’s right next to the motel most of them use.
They are really super friendly and very down-to-earth. They seem to fit right in with us! They don’t view us as hicks, and we don’t put them up on pedestals. When it’s race day, I set my home security alarm (website) and get to the Speedway early. My friends and I are usually able to get really good seats, and we will spend a few hours there before the race even starts so we can listen to music and watch the warm ups. It may only happen twice a year, but those are two times of the year where we Martinsville country girls have the time of our lives.
